THE EDEN CHIPMILL WOOD FIRED POWER STATION AND THE WWF

Eden chipmill managers are claiming that the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) supports South East Fibre Exports' proposed forest furnace.
Public Affairs Manager, Mr Vince Phillips made this statement on ABC Regional radio on 4 August 2009 (transcript not on ABC website).
The WWF leaflet (a summary of a 2004 report commissioned by WWF in Europe was handed by SEFE staff to guests at the SERCA public forum, The Burning Issue, on 1 August 2009. The full report is at: http://assets.panda.org/downloads/biomassreportfinal.pdf
The WWF has put strict conditions on its support for biomass burning that the  SEFE plant could not possibly meet.

  • It requires that "good forestry practices" must be adopted.

  • "There should be no conversion of natural forests or high conservation value habitats involved in raw material production or supply."

  • It also requires that "growing practices must protect and enhance soil fertility."

  • "Water use should be assessed throughout the production and conversion chain, with particular emphasis on avoiding damage to watersheds."
