Media alert
Friday could be crunch time for koala logging
Conservationists are preparing to be in Mumbulla State Forest in
numbers on Friday morning in case the Government attempts to resume
woodchipping of koala habitat there.
Spokesperson, Ms Harriett Swift says that logging has been held up
since last week because Forests NSW did not comply with its license
provisions regarding koala surveys.
Greens Upper House MP and spokesperson for South East NSW, Lee
Rhiannon will be present in the forest tomorrow to support the koala
protests.
"I am looking forward to joining conservationists who are working so
hard to stop the logging of this precious koala habitat. Their
courageous action is critical to pushing the government to stop the
logging," she says.
"When Parliament resumes at the end of April I will be putting
forward a motion calling on Premier Keneally to quarantine this area
from these ill-conceived logging operations which jeopardise the
continued existence of the Far South Coast's dwindling koala
population .
Harriett Swift says that local residents have been in the forest
every day since logging started and are determined to stop this
logging and save the koalas.
"Our last koalas are far more than important than a logging
operation that will yield 95% woodchips," she says.
